Ancient Science: Observation and protected by observation
In quantum mechanics we talk about quantum particle(s) or entities being in every possible state (wave or particle) till an observer is present. As I have said in my books and many of my blogs, a fact that is questionable in such a definition is why have we only included the two states that we know of here and called them “all possibilities”? That a quantum entity can have wave or particle properties, is known to us. But, there can exist other states that we do not know of because we have not discovered the observer to observe those properties. If quantum theory has to be applied back to itself, then even such unobserved states should be a possibility until observed. So how to account for these unobserved properties. The next even more important point, that is not explained is the link between this concept of existence of “all possibilities until observed” to the “macro level beings and objects” that form reality. If, the quantum particles such as quarks and higgs boson are supposed to form these beings and objects around us in reality, how do they come together to form these macro objects and beings around us? Who observes from the micro all the way to the macro and how does that observation translate or transform to this observation around us?
In ancient science we do not see an assumption of “all possibilities” being made which gives an idea of “discrete possibilities”. The Brahman or the underlying truth is considered to be the “indeterminate truth” and not as an “existence of all possibilities”. In fact, according to ancient science, existence is also not present and that makes a huge difference in the way we study the reality around us. When we look at it from this perspective, “Shunya” is not “void”, because “void” can only be when something exists. “Shunya” is a term that is used to indicate the state when the “indeterminate remains still the indeterminate”. So, when that indeterminate Brahman gains an observation (by whatever process), then it comes into existence and becomes “determinate” for that one observed property(ies). This implies nothing about any of the other possibilities or properties that could have come into existence. In truth it is not even talked about as possibilities or properties. It is talked about as ISha or a potential or capability to exist. Given that the ancient science talks about and explains the establishing of “continuity” as a part and parcel of existence, this potential or capability is infinite and can precipitate in any continuous combination.
Another of the unexplained or not studied concept of modern science is “continuity”. We can say that a quantum entity attains a set of properties because of observation. But, we have again failed to account for time, that gives it the continuous existence of that particle or wave behaviour. So, in our theory, only if the observer exists continuously and observes continuously will the properties be retained. Is this so? Because in this case the external observer is required for existence. This is where the “protected by observation” or the “becomes” concept of ancient science very important.
So, what is “protected by observation”? This is again one of those concepts that we do not consider at all in modern science. This is termed as “adhipA” in BHPS. “adhi = observation” + “pAH = protect”. Hence adhipAH means protected by observation. When we read the Chapter 6 of BHPS, we find that it extensively talks about the observer and observation. The 6th chapter starts off with:

Observing the existing acquired quality ends the others, thus the multitude quality impulse, by the act of observation of the established obstructions by the becomes, invokes the appearance of the place of division.
What is important to note here is the term “place of division”. As I said before continuity is not considered by us. We need to understand that we don’t seem to have considered continuity in multiple forms. In terms of the observer required as explained above, as well as the continuity of the underlying Brahman that is being observed. In quantum theory, for example the double slit experiment, we have already split the Brahman into photons and observe the properties of the photons. But, that is not how the indeterminate Brahman actually should be, isn’t it? It should have been a continuous expanse of some truth that is being observed. So, how did it get limited to the smallest photon that we are studying? If we talked about observation, then we need to explain how this continuity of that expanse of truth is disrupted to create divisions? As the Shiva Sutra – sambhovopaya says: The self limited by knowledge is the origin of the discriminating indistinct body where knowledge becomes the basis of everything. So, how is this limitation established even before knowledge or self is created? In this verse above this has been brought out. It says when observed, all other potential or capabilities cease to exist and that act of observation also establishes the “division” along with the “becomes” of that which is being observed.
While the chapter 6 is named ShoDaSha vargAdhyAyaH = “chapter on the sixteenth group”, this can be interpreted as “chapter on group of double eight”. The reason I have shifted this focus as this is because “double eight configuration” or “dvaya AshTa” or I have also translated it as “dva + yashTa = two thread configuration” is a term that is used in Surya Siddanta all through the description (Read more in book Surya Siddanta: Emergence of empirical reality). The formation of this double thread configuration is the first formation which according to Surya Siddanta can be independently observed. This is said in Verse 34 of the first chapter:
bhodayA bhagaNaiH svaiH svairUnAH svasvodayA yuge ||34||
Emergence of the 8 (curves), produced focal points, unrestrained three (gaps), 2 (focal points) is double thread configuration when transformed, observing this(pattern) within the series of becomes by itself without independence gives rise to a connected self
In BHPS we find that this is referred to as the ShoDaSha varga configuration is described as below:

By the movement of the group of (double eight?), the ancestors of the world is created, by extending, that is co-rendered establishing amicable distributed control. The threads of the environment clusters giving gaps in penetration, attaching to form seven part, the tenth part of penetration of new parts to form double eight? part, “becomes” part of 20 parts of knowledge agent parts, distributed parts of parts causing to extend, parts with knowledge of axis with parts of knowledge of gaps in the six part penetration and primarily extending in that environment, there exists shield of the multitude where there is guidance, the irregular transformation of pattern of homogeneous multitude there reverses.
When we read this we find that while the description nearly matches the description in Surya Siddanta, it is not an exact match, but another version of the seven part thought which has a six part gap which has knowledge of the gaps and knowledge of axis and transforms into the root thoughts. That part seems to match across many documents. But, again the description talks about these clustering together and a shield being formed to that clustering to make it stable. This concept is further evolved in the further verses of this chapter before it talks about being “protected by observation”. This is first introduced in Verse 22, which says:

Acquiring an odd portion at the consumed resting place, the formless of the acquired portion is protected by observation. The work performed by the even portion clusters a shield by the curve supporting flow. The entire performing portion associated with the pleasant boundary of potent character, observing the base network interference bound to the becomes at the consumed resting place of the uneven series, consuming homogeneous work of the consumed bound becomes produced in the reverse order approaches a thought. The becomes part protected by observation, the consumed series having direction supports increasing heat agents, transforms the boundless seeking to individual heat agents portion of thoughts. The creator of spherical region of thermal energy associated with energy of forms, attached to the impulse, dissolves that movement in curve in the entire unborn observation of base network protected by the ambu residing in that place. Thus it is because of the increase in unborn portion in the base network and precipitation of these attained there where seeking exists, the becomes part of the seeking expands starting movement of becomes series. The third part of the seeking part and control of the uneven curve belonging to impulse is knowledge coming from the first thought, made evident by movement of the eight part of the axis of seven.
It should be noted that irrespective of which literature (Surya Siddanta or BHPS), it seems to split the groups into odd groups and even groups i.e., the oja and the sama portions. When we look at it from the perspective of the “minAH rashI” as I had described in the previous blog, we have divisions of network of thoughts that needs to keep getting replaced with new divisions formed to create the minAH rashi. This can best be studied by looking at the odd divisions and even divisions. If, we assume that the place of formation of the first division is what is called here the “consumed resting place”, then we find that “observation” should be the recurrence of the same pattern at the same place as the divisions move out of the resting place and is replaced by new divisions. This then is “protected by observation” or adhipAH. This recurrence in pattern is required for the self to sustain and more extensions to occur.
