BPHS – Translation of Chapter -1

The BPHS or bRhat Parashara hora shastram is considered to be the primary driver for a number of Sanskrit works on jyotiSha. As I have indicated a number of times in many posts in this blog, there needs to be a certain level of understanding before a knowledge strikes you in a totally different meaning and you start understanding what is being said. The contents of this book is also the same. Read it as an astrology book and you will only understand the fluff involved in predicting a future. The problem is I believe, the fact that everyone believes and thinks that astrology is a “prediction of the future”. As I have written in many of my previous posts, it is possible to predict the future, if reality is viewed differently. But, after translating a few chapters in this book, I find that it is much much more than that.

Let’s start with purely translating the word jyothiSha. It is loosely translated as “astrology” where astrology as we all understand it, is to predict the future. This is because this study is usually associated to stars and sun and moon, their positions and blah.. blah.. and blah. But, as I have said in the book “Surya Siddanta: Emergence of empirical reality“, the astrological translation of these verses are purely incidental. They match because all objects need to behave in a similar manner for the what reality is. Same goes here. If we do a transliteration of this word, i.e., split this word up and translate it, it comes out to be “jya + eti + iSha = control + approach + seeking”. So, the word “jyothiSha” itself translates to “approaching the control of seeking” which is completely a different concept from “just predicting the future”. When you predict the future you are “purely reading the course of travel of a path of existence”. Whereas this is saying “controlling” the path. As I have indicated time and again, there is no concept of time in the Sanskrit text, purely the concept of KAla which is “series of changes”. Hence, it should have been obvious that they could not have had a science to predict the future. This “series of changes” lead to the “path of existence” being established due to the “seeking” out of changes that “becomes” when they match a logic that is established for the individual self. Thus, if we can visualise an expanse of varying distribution of energies which is being traversed by itself because it folds onto itself, then understanding repeating patterns and seeking specific patterns of distribution in this expanse gives us a self. Thus rather than just visualising a varying distribution of energy, we can view the layer of the various selves in the expanse as a “pattern of distribution of seeking on this varying distribution of energies”. Thus, jyothiSha is basically a science in which “this distribution of seeking layer can be studied and controlled”, which is completely different from astrology as we know it. If this is true, then it should be seen that the technology that comes out of such an understanding far far exceeds what we call technology in modern science. What is being talked about is not a helpless being trying to understand time and manoeuver around its perceived ravages by predicting what is going to happen next, but a being that fully is aware and controls the flow of their own circumstances. Such a being has no concept of past, present or future.

Coming to Brhat Parashara hora shastram, translating the title we have “bRhat = immense Parashara = beyond motion (paras + shara = beyond + configuration) + horA = a line / a thread shAstram = rules”. Hence it translates to “A thread of rules of the immense beyond configuration”. So, this is basically describing the rules that govern the environment which is beyond the configuration we see. The first chapter title itself bears this out. It is sRshTikramakathanAdhyAya = sRshTi + krama + kathana + adhyAya = creation + of series + rendering + chapter. So it is “A chapter on creation of rendering a series”. The summary of chapter translates as below:

The cause for the movable/unmovable is nothing else other than appearance of the acquired pattern, the rendered guided by knowledge of the closely woven direction of creation. The regular distribution of density across the every rendered truth and continuous aggregation of the given energy, facilitates binding of scattered movement. It (regular distribution?) is not given because of remote guidance nor aggregation of that movement, there is no doubt that it is given due to the produced destruction of gaps by regular division.

the nature of the single unmanifested is equilibrium of the infinite potential capabilities, the pure true essence of the master of movable/unmovable is linking the unqualified with the directional quality. The work intent of the cycle of existence, is the nature built by mixing thoughts before acquiring thermal energy by that single part, which is(that single part) the entire movable/unmovable created until it (single part?) attains appearance. Its energy has 3 divisions, when the previous division perishes that flows into another, that extent and its natural state are ineffectual in its isolated appearance. The manifestation of the nature of the unmanifested ends the beneficial energy of the equilibrium, invoking restraint, when that equilibrium of the nature of unmanifested and capabilities are both continuously linked.

By connecting the nature of manifested to the directional becomes, restrains the rendering of the infinite capabilities, mixing the true essence of the natural states with the capabilities and the becomes capabilities is a quality of dopant. Attaining distribution of capabilities from the forward obscure at rest, covering the inner nature of beneficial energy penetrating the four, thus building capabilities of the becomes if (it is) impelled. By the penetration of the collective pull and unobstructed progress of interference, this form is rendered, the inert capability is connected to the collective pull of the surrounding energy of the equilibrium. The progress of interference by dopants, unobstructed by capabilities, connected to that true nature, a great collective pull propels production from then progressing interference, destroying the incomplete.

unobstructed, produced by itself, that created collection’s form renders the entire extracted and every potential capability connected into multiple self-capabilities. The work of that is to maintain the direction having becomes (that makes it) from that entire expanse, even when the true nature is penetrated by dopants and inertia (that makes it). Produced when propelled by varying energy, the occurring pattern brings about primary limits, whose becomes are an inert expanse of gaps without stress in which is present capabilities by themselves. Mixing capabilities with equilibrium always appears as threefold movable/immovable because of the efforts to bind the created becomes capabilities to the at rest capabilities by agitating the environment.

the primary nature shines through the entire seeking and individual seeking because all of that which is this is established in the truth which is the primary nature. The entire seeking and individual seeking is established in the previous division part of the two where thoughts are, the individual parts i.e, previous division and subsequent fixed, both are certainly parts of the primary nature. By acquiring the unrelenting pattern, the entire pleasant/unpleasant are created unrelentingly, approaches the other and subsequent many parts of the primary nature. The penetration of the capabilities and thus this seeking in the subsequent part attains mixing unrelentingly, the extracted capabilities by themselves knowing other thoughts of subsequent individual part.

Below are the details of the translation. The chapter starts with asking a few questions first. Isn’t it true, we need to be able to ask the correct questions to get the answers that will take us somewhere. The asking of a question is as important as the answers.

Together, this translates to:

How does the prime impulse simultaneously becoming aware of the 3 indistinct configuration of remote, approach towards giving movement to that belonging to attachment, instead of the made manifesting. (and how does)the first prominent favourable hidden primary partial knowledge of aggregate of 3 that controls the seeking woven into a thread, continuously multiply? (How does?) approaching the weaving of seeking, 3 extracted primary threads limit the knowledge of impulse? (How does) the other invoked obstructions end as a resultant effect of description? How did the flow of creation produce the penetration of this movable/immovable and how is it destroyed? (how does) gaps exist continuously in the established becomes and (what is the) connection between description and this expanse? (How is) regularly question the agitation in the movement of the other, producing facilitating free space? How is that primary created of that connected nature repeatedly invoked?

The main concept to note when reading these verses (in-fact all Sanskrit verses) is that since “time is not a concept”, when an immense is considered, it is not just immense of space as we know it. We need to see it as a blob that is inclusive of “time” and that “time is represented as changes across that blob”. So, the start and end of time as we know it is engulfed within that blob. Only because we sequentially traverse this blob by the aide of awareness does it reduce down to a three dimensional sequence of light images(which is also said later in this chapter). When we look at such a blob, while “how was such a blob created?” a good question, even more basic which we do not know the answer to is “How does such a blob give rise to this awareness that we all have and how is it continuously existing?” An in-depth of this question is what is asked above. Once, these questions are asked, it goes ahead to answer them.

This translates to:

What is important to note here is that it says, that the “guidance is given by gaps” which is very important. If gaps were not present, then distribution would not have formed at all. This is pretty important. To understand this, we can view this as a semi-conductor. A pure semi-conductor is usually in electrical equilibrium and should not be able to conduct electricity at all. So, such a material seems inert. But, introduce into it a dopant with is an acceptor or a donor and we introduce into it holes and electrons that can jump those holes and it starts conducting. Similarly here, take a pure immense with many properties and it has regular distribution of some density of a property, then it is inert or in equilibrium. Does not facilitate anything. But introduce into it a “impurity or dopant or rajas”, that introduces gaps or holes and things change fast.

This translates to:

The next important information that is given in these verses is “directional quality”. Just having gaps and distribution is not sufficient. That needs to be taken and linked to a direction, then and only then will there be any formation or awareness.

Translates to:

Here, it tells us how the dopant works. In a semi-conductor, a dopant introduces an atom with varying electron count which introduces holes. Here, the dopant introduced mixes the existing capabilities with other capabilities because of which we get a gap and hence interference is introduced.

Translates to:

Translates to
the primary nature shines through the entire seeking and individual seeking because all of that which is this is established in the truth which is the primary nature. The entire seeking and individual seeking is established in the previous division part of the two where thoughts are, the individual parts i.e, previous division and subsequent fixed, both are certainly parts of the primary nature. By acquiring the unrelenting pattern, the entire pleasant/unpleasant are created unrelentingly, approaches the other and subsequent many parts of the primary nature. The penetration of the capabilities and thus this seeking in the subsequent part attains mixing unrelentingly, the extracted capabilities by themselves knowing other thoughts of subsequent individual part.
