Ancient Science: Energy and its forms – 2
As I had explained in the blog “Ancient science: energy and its forms“, according to ancient science, energy is the variance in concentration of the underlying natures present in that minute spread of the vast expanse that is un-manifested and unknown from which this reality has sprung. The Surya Siddanta says:
acintyAvyaktarUpAya nirguNAya gunAtmane samastajagadAdhAra mUrtaye brahmaNe namah alpAvAshiShTe tu kRta mayA nAma mahAsuraH rahasyaM paraM jijnAsurjnAnamuttamam
The incomprehensible, unmanifested, that without qualities, yields to creation which forms the basis of each and every movable qualified as self
The infinitesimally minute unordered, but made, contained in what is called the abundant inactive, mainly concealing the inquisitiveness for active knowledge
It should be remembered that while we can qualify the expanse as “vast” and the “spread of nature(acquirable knowledge)” to be minute, given that the expanse is unknown, we have no way of knowing the comparison between the two (the un-manifested compared to the region where the reality has sprung). Yet, it appears to us that the expanse is vast, because we have not qualified or traversed it to gain knowledge about it, and for that same reason it is un-manifested.
Now, when we consider this from the perspective of the observed “law of conservation of energy“, we find that the “infinitesimally minute unordered” that is being talking about can be truly considered as a closed system within a vast expanse of un-manifested. The variance in nature due to diffusion that is contained within that minute spread should appear to be fixed. Note, I say should appear to be fixed. Why is this so? We need to understand that we are distinguishing between two things here: that which we can know because we can detect change in properties of some nature and associate knowledge to it and that we cannot know because we do not have the ability to detect the change in certain properties of some other nature. So, while the vast expanse can have infinite knowledge possible, we are limited by that which we can detect and form knowledge about. For example, if we wanted to write an analytical algorithm using data collected from temperature and pressure sensors, we cannot have the program give any intelligence about humidity, because only temperature and pressure data is present. So, to the analytical algorithm, humidity is a un-manifested expanse in which temperature and pressure data is a minute unordered data from which knowledge can be formed. It should also be noted, that while the temperature and pressure itself can vary hugely, it is limited by the detection capabilities of the sensor and the environment in which the sensors are deployed. Similarly, the variance in nature (which is the energy) of the closed system that we are detecting knowledge from, has to seem as if it remains constant to us, the sensors.
To qualify this definition of energy further and distinguish between the different forms of energy, we need to first identify some way to classify and reduce these variances in concentrations into recognisable patterns that can be studied. While modern science defines many types of energies such as thermal, kinetic, mechanical, electromagnetic and so on, it should be realised that, since we have defined “energy is the capacity to do work”, we end up classifying based on what is triggering the work to be done. Here, work is considered first rather than energy being present independent of work. For example, if we consider coal, it has the capacity to burn, hence we say it is an energy source for thermal energy. But, the same when we consider electromagnetic energy, it is classified as that because it is energy present in electromagnetic waves of the light spectrum.
As we saw according to ancient science, energy is the potential for variance in nature that is distributed as the nature is traversed sequentially. It should be noted here, that these definitions do not depend on the type of nature or property of nature detected. Thus, energy can be defined as the same for any variance detected and the characteristics of variance is also independent of the type of nature. Thus, we find that energy in ancient science is more primary than work which can be present without the definition of work, then we cannot use the trigger for work to be a way of classifying energy. We need to find properties of the inherent variations that will classify energy. So, what are the abstract characteristics of such a variance which does not depend on the nature itself?
If we take variance of nature, there are only two abstract characteristics the variance can have. The first is that the variance can be repetitive. When a pattern of repetition is found, then it becomes an oscillation. This oscillation in pattern is the internal energy or the thermal energy i.e., Agni of that traversing existence or self. Given that everything is related back to “thought” which is a specific pattern of change occurring, thermal energy then becomes an oscillation of a derivative of the thought pattern. Thus, it says (Read more in the book Surya Siddanta: Emergence of empirical reality):
kalA ShaShTayA tatShaShTayA bhAga ucyate tatriMshatA bhavedrAshirbhagaNo dvAdashaiva te ||28|| yuge sUryajnashukrAnAM khacatuSHkaradArNAvAH kujArkigurushIghrANAM bhagaNAH pUrvayAyinAm ||29|| indo rasAgnitritrIShu saptabhUdharamArgaNAH dastratryaSHTarasAnkAkShilocanAni kujasya tu ||30||

If we read further, we find that this is the only type of energy that is talked about. Agni. It can be considered as heat (uShna) in the higher transformation levels that is experienced by the individual, but it is always a play of this pattern that forms thermal energy.
The second characteristic of the variance in nature that we encounter is a momentum to move in some forward direction established. As this variance is perceived sequentially, the path taken has to move in some direction, marked the forward direction, for the oscillation to be perceivable. This potential for the oscillation or the repetition to occur in that forward direction then becomes the next type of energy and is called marut or kinetic energy. If we look at the Surya Siddanta, there is no specific definition for this, but through out the book, momentum is talked about and as I have indicated “movement” is considered to be the primary requirement for all reality to exist. But, the presence can be derived and is specifically mentioned in the verses below (of chapter 2):
adRshyarUpAH kAlasya mUrtayo bhagaNAshritAH shIghramandoccapAtAkhyA grahANAM gatihetavaH ||2.1|| tadvAtarashmibhirbaddhAstaiH savyetarapANibhiH prAk pashcAtapakRShyante yathAsannaM svadiNmukham ||2.2|| pravahAkhyo marut tAMstu svoccAbhimukhamIrayet pUrvAparApakRShTAste gatiM yAnti pRthagvidhAm ||2.3||
The invisible nature of the series of changes is embedded in the form of series of becomes, in conjunction, the obscure appearance of faint apex acquires a moving path that rapidly penetrates the becomes construct bonds which ends in place with other reverse becomes. If the self-assigned direction settles in a place, once concentrated pull is established, the obscure flowing kinetic energy ends inertia (of the self-direction), approaches directing in the direction of the self apex once other reverse pulls on the established path are independently produced.
The second chapter of Surya Siddanta is devoted to describing these forces that act upon the apex of movement allowing the existence to flow and create a path. While in typical translation, marut is translated as wind, I believe if this context is looked at, it says marut ends inertia, taMstu = tam + astu = inertia + end, then it can only mean kinetic energy. It should also be noted that this is described as “an obscure flow”, because unlike the thermal energy, this is a derived because of an observation.
But, it should be noted that beyond these two parameters, variance cannot have any other abstraction. Thus, these need to be the primary forms of energy and any other form of energy should just be a derivative from these. For example, mechanical energy that we classify is a form of the same kinetic energy, electromagnetic energy, light energy, chemical energy, nuclear energy is a form of the same thermal energy with specialised patterns of variance of nature of the underlying thought pattern variation.
