As I translate all these verses, one aspect stands out clearly. Words can be retained across time in the form of fossilised recordings, either on stones or various printed forms, but nothing can assure us that the associated concepts have been retained across the span of time. Words once recorded, follow a life of their own!
As I have said over and over again, the upanishads, the sthotrams, ashtakams and so on seem to have fallen from their original study which seems to have been to find answers to questions such as “How does the unmanifested become the manifested with density?”, which, by the way is what quantum physics tries to answer, how Higgs field becomes Higgs boson?! Instead, these texts have fallen into a set of religious fervour that is followed blindly, based on rigid rules put down by a set of fools who understand nothing, rather than being the basis of our inherent curiosity of wanting to understand! This has prevented us from improving upon those beautiful concepts and we have ended up losing them out completely and have only a set of jumbled meaningless words!
In my view archeology should have a branch that involves a study of “morphing of understanding of the underlying language or communication”, both recorded and non-recorded, over time, so that the required corrections can be applied to resolve history! Else we will all be only hypothesising based on symbolic representations and our understanding of that which is unveiled, instead of knowing!
The concept of “linga” is definitely one such lost concept that we need to re-discover. The pity of it is no one even realises it needs to be re-discovered! Sadly in this age of commercialism, creating a unnecessary “shopping app and becoming a billionaire” is appreciated as cutting edge technology, but trying to understand and know the core concepts of existence such as “prana”, “aso”, “smaro”, “shiva”, “linga” etc are considered to be non-productive! Welcome to the world of capitalism!
Anyways, coming back to the ashtakam, in the previous post I had translated the first four verses of this very nice song. Here I will translate the next 4 verses.
Kungkuma-Candana-Lepita-Linggam Pangkaja-Haara-Su-Shobhita-Linggam | San.cita-Paapa-Vinaashana-Linggam Tat Prannamaami Sadaashiva-Linggam ||5|| kum + kum + candan + lepita + lingam = ejection + reflected light + smeared + lingam pankaja + hAra + su + shobita + lingam = concentric circles + garland + greatly + adorned + lingam sancita + papa + vinAshana + lingam = dense + imperfection + destroyer + lingam
Here to note is the translation of Kungkuma, while kungkuma translates to saffron, I think the original version stays in how we pronounce it i.e., “kumkum”. This takes on a totally new meaning when we split it as kum + kum which becomes expulsion or ejection. “canda” also takes on a new meaning now. “canda” is really moon. I have been thinking about why this words has been used so many places. For eg., in the Maha Kalabhairava sthotram, it talks about “Candra bimba”. I wonder anymore if it has to do with different forms of light. So, “canda” becomes reflected light, surya becomes “direct light” and agni becomes “heat”. If we look at the Maha Kalabhairava sthotram’s first verse, Shira Mukuta Jataa Shekharam Chandra Bimbam, which means the entangled reflect light at the crown of the head! Here, also reflected light makes more sense than moon or sandal! The “pankaja” I have explained in the kala bhairava astakam.
So, the translation now comes as:
“The ejection of the reflected light smeared as a garland in concentric circles adorning the lingam destroying the imperfection of density, I know as the lingam that is forever the shiva lingam”
Deva-Ganna-Aarcita-Sevita-Linggam Bhaavair-Bhaktibhir-Eva Ca Linggam | Dinakara-Kotti-Prabhaakara-Linggam Tat Prannamaami Sadaashiva-Linggam ||6|| deva + gaNa + arcita + sevita + lingam = energy + banded + adorned + preserved + lingam bhAva + bhakti + abhi + reva + ca + lingam = becoming + affinity + into + multiple + also + lingam dinakara + koTi + prabhakara + lingam = making day or light + highest + light maker + lingam
This gets translated as:
“Banded energy adorning the lingam is preserved becoming bonded into multiple creating light, the highest light creator, I know as the lingam that is forever the shiva lingam”
Asstta-Dalo-Parivessttita-Linggam Sarva-Samudbhava-Kaaranna-Linggam | Asstta-Daridra-Vinaashita-Linggam Tat Prannamaami Sadaashiva-Linggam ||7|| aShTa + dala + pari + veShTita + lingam = to get + fragmented + from + enveloped + lingam sarva + samudbhava + kAraNa + lingam = all + existence + cause + lingam aShTa + daridra + viNaShana + lingam = to reach + to be deprived of + destroyed + lingam
“To get fragmented from the bounded lingam is the cause of all existence, to reach the destruction of deprivation is the lingam, I know as the lingam that is forever the shiva lingam”
Suraguru-Suravara-Puujita-Linggam Suravana-Pusspa-Sada-Aarcita-Linggam | Paraatparam Paramaatmaka-Linggam Tat Prannamaami Sadaashiva-Linggam ||8|| sura + guru + sura + vara + pUjita + lingam = to shine + dense + to shine + space + initiated + lingam sura+ vana + pushpa + archita + lingam = shine + grove + expanding / blooming + adorned + lingam parAt + param + paramatmaka + lingam = remote + henceforth + personification + lingam
“Initiating the shining of dense space, shining thickset expanding adorning the remote henceforth personifying the lingam, I know as the lingam that is forever the shiva lingam”
So, putting it all together, the Lingasktakam translates as below:
The churn surrounding, the equilibrium shines through, adorned by purity appearing as lingam, causing the destruction of the difficulty in instigating birth,
Principal impulse of energy adorned by heat of desire, not acted upon by the warmth (of that desire), destroying the heat of that tumult,
The entire dense dark greatly smeared by the power of forming and retaining thoughts causing to augment them accomplishing light and dark to be formed,
The great knowing adorned to produce easily motion bound greatly destroying the diffusion of energy,
The ejection of the reflected light smeared as a garland in concentric circles adorning the lingam destroying the imperfection of density,
Banded energy adorning the lingam is preserved becoming bonded into multiple creating light, the highest light creator,
To get fragmented from the bounded lingam is the cause of all existence, to reach the destruction of deprivation is the lingam,
Initiating the shining of dense space, shining thickset expanding adorning the remote henceforth personifying the lingam, I know as the lingam that is forever the shiva lingam
I know of no explanation that can explain any better than this. This has to be read keeping in mind that this is the “form” of that shiva which is just coming into manifestation from the “unmanifested”.
